Course Description

This course starts by exploring Tibetan Buddhist music, the sound we are all familiar with from films such as Kundun and from SUV commercials. We then move on to Tibet's attractive but much less well known secular and popular genres, taking in en route the use of Tibetan traditional music by the Dalai Lama's exile government to promote Tibetan identity, and Chinese appropriation of Tibetan folksongs. In the second half of the course, we look at musics of neighboring cultures that have had centuries of cultural, religious and/or musical interaction with Tibet: Mongolia, Yunnan, and Central Asia. The class will include numerous AV examples and live in-class demos of music and dance.
