Senior Researcher Linda Jakobson of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs will discuss the prerequisites and a possible framework for a long-term political solution to the impasse in the Taiwan Strait. Her proposed model "A Greater Chinese Union" constitutes the loosest of unions. it would have all the ceremonial trappings necessary to facilitate the image of a unified China and simultaneously one with international safeguards and possibly even the demilitarization of Taiwan. Jakobson co-authored the Taiwan Strait IV report on this subject for the International Crisis Group.
