Dr. Britta Erickson
(Stanford University)
Dr. Britta Erickson, an independent scholar and curator, will speak about a monumental socialist realist sculpture "The Rent Collection Courtyard." Her talk will follow the vicissitudes of the "Rent Collection Courtyard" from a Cultural Revolution model sculpture to an award-winning conceptual piece (Cai Guoqiang's "Venice's Rent Collection Courtyard") to authorless figure sculpture (Cai's sculptures were removed to a small Italian town), and will touch on the lawsuits filed by the supposed original artists in Sichuan, and the invective directed against Cai for "stealing" this work.
