Sociopolitical conflicts between the Han Chinese and Uyghur have made ethnicity the most pronounced aspect of contemporary Uyghur identity. Music, ubiquitous and highly valued in Uyghur society, is often an indispensable venue where ethnic boundaries and political tensions are identified, negotiated, and reconfigured. Drawing from recent ethnographic research on Uyghur music in the Autonomous Region, Chuen-Fung Wong explores the manifold relationships between music and politics, including music as a means for political control, resistance, censorship, and cultural appropriation.
Chuen-Fung Wong is a doctoral candidate in ethnomusicology at UCLA, planning the defense of his dissertation -- based on his fieldwork in Xinjiang on Uyghur music, language, and culture -- for June 2006. In the fall, he joins Maclaster College as an assistant professor of music.
