For more than two decades, the CCTV Spring Festival Evening Party has run consistently as a ritualized media spectacle that draws an audience of millions every year. It is produced and consumed as a newly invented festival celebration custom, and is regarded as one of the most prominent mass media events in contemporary China. This research project treats the TV show as a pedagogical narrative form about Chinese nationhood and national identity. It aims to explore the internal ambivalences and disjunctions in its political discourses and art forms.
Hui Zhang is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Education.
Open to UCLA students and faculty, and to others by invitation.
