In addition to his many publications on a wide range of topics in Chinese art history from classical painting and calligraphy to modern and contemporary visual culture, Jerome Silbergeld has two books on Chinese film: China into Film: Frames of Reference in Contemporary Chinese Cinema (London: Reaktion Books, 1999), and Hitchcock with a Chinese Face: Cinematic Doubles, Oedipal Triangles, and China's Moral Voice (University of Washington Press, 2004). The current talk will be on director Jiang Wen's and cinematographer Gu Changwei's two great film collaborations, In the Heat of the Sun (1994) and Devils on the Doorstep (2000). This is the subject of a forthcoming book from Professor Silbergeld (along the lines of his Hitchcock book).
