Illustrated Lecture: Early Chinese Manuscripts

The Archeology Institute of America - OC Society will be hosting an illustrated lecture from 2PM to 4PM, Sunday, February 3, at the DeNault Auditorium in Robert Grimm Hall, Concordia University, by Dr. Guolong Lai, Assistant Professor of Art History and Asian Studies, University of Florida,
on what Excavated Chinese Manuscripts tell us about the production of texts in China.
Using the recently excavated bamboo and silk manuscripts from early Chinese tombs, this lecture will explore how books were invented to control textual accuracy with the inclusion of tables of contents, prefaces, and even character counts at the end of the text. The lecture will then explore the sociology of early Chinese texts by focusing on such issues as the material form of early Chinese manuscripts and its impact on the circulation, reading habits, and the relationship between literary and non-literary texts.
