From the mid-19th century to the early 1940s, American college graduates traveled to China to serve on Christian missionary posts. Most of the women missionaries, like Grace Rowley, were teachers in provincial schools run by the various Protestant and Catholic organizations, while others served the YMCA/YWCA in China. Miss Rowley, like many of her contemporaries, kept a diary while in China; she also gathered together a rich archive--photographs, letters, memorabilia such as Chinese paper dolls, and other documents--that provide an intimate glimpse into her life in China and serves as witness to an extraordinary period in Chinese and American history.
