The talk will explore the tensions generated by the Republican lawmakers’ attempt to reorganize hierarchical Chinese social and family relations into a system based upon individual rights and gender equality. It will discuss surname legislation, husband impotence, and cohabitation lawsuits in order to illuminate legal and popular constructions of gender and power relations.
