Global Learning Institute Launched with Student Summer Program in Shanghai
International Institute partners with Anderson School of Management to create for-credit "Emerging Economies: Asia" program at Tongji University in Shanghai; students can stay on for business or NGO internships
The UCLA International Institute, in partnership with the Anderson Graduate School of Management, has announced the creation of a new Global Learning Institute featuring for-credit summer classes in emerging economies to be taught by leading UCLA faculty members. The first offering of this new program, to be held in the summer of 2004, will be titled "Emerging Economies: Asia" and will take place at Tongji University in Shanghai, China. (An initial plan for programs in Hong Kong and Mexico have been dropped this year.)
The class is featured on the UCLA Travel Study Programs website as an International Development Studies and Management course, and will be held from June 26 to July 31, 2004. The base fee for the course for UC undergraduates is $3,200, and slightly higher for UC graduate students and non-UC students. Students are responsible for their own air fare and and meals. Sample budgets are available on the UCLA Travel Study Programs website. Course fees include registration, tuition, housing, and field trips. Completion of the course earns 4 quarter units of credit. Visit the Travel Study Program website for prerequisite information and online registration.
"Emerging Economies: Asia" in Shanghai will be taught by UCLA professor and anthropologist Yunxiang Yan, a specialist in economic anthropology and social change. Professor Yan is the author of Private Life under Socialism: Love, Intimacy, and Family Change in a Chinese Village, 1949-1999 (Stanford University Press, 2003). The course description promises: "This program will explore the relationship between the old and the new in Shanghai, concentrating on the city’s booming economy, the role of the communist political system, and how the lives of the Shanghai-ese have changed since the opening to the market and the west a decade ago."
As an added incentive, there will be selected opportunities for some of the students to stay on after the class is over and do internships with local companies or with the government or an NGO.
*Please note that instructor consent is required for this program. After completion of an online application, the information will be forwarded to the instructor for approval. Students will be notified immediately regarding payment and reservation upon instructor consent.
