Applying to the Graduate Program

The Islamic Studies graduate program offers both a Master's degree (M.A.) and a PhD.

 

General admissions information, instructions about applying, and the online application for admission can be found at UCLA’s Graduate Division Website.

All materials must be complete before the application is considered.

The following materials are required components of the admission application:

• Application form completed via UCLA Graduate Division’s Admissions Website
• Application fee
• Supplemental Materials required of all applicants
• Additional requirements and supplemental material required of international applicants
• Admission Departmental Supplemental Form

To keep in mind when applying to the Islamic Studies Program:

• M.A. applicants are expected to have completed the equivalent of one course in early Islamic history and three courses in Islamic cultures and institutions. Applicants are expected to demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in one of the major languages of countries with Muslim majorities or very large Muslim minorities, including Arabic, Berber, Hausa, Indonesian Iranian languages, Malay, Swahili, Turkic languages, Urdu, Wolof, and Yoruba
• For admission to the Ph.D. program, applicants should hold a Master's degree from a program with requirements equivalent to those of UCLA's MA program in Islamic Studies. Advanced-level proficiency in Arabic is also required
• Applicants who have any deficiencies in prerequisites will be considered for admission on a provisional basis for one to three quarters. If admitted on a provisional basis, a student must satisfy the prerequisites by taking the appropriate courses. Such courses may not be applied toward a graduate degree in the program
• The Islamic Studies Program and the School of Public Health offer a concurrent degree program whereby students can obtain the Master of Arts in Islamic Studies and the Master of Public Health. Applicants interested in this program should apply separately to the Islamic Studies Program and the School of Public Health
• GRE scores should be sent from ETS to the UCLA Islamic Studies Program using the Institution Code R4837
• The Islamic Studies Program receives a high volume of supplementary material during admissions season. There may be a delay in reflecting our receipt of your admissions documents in the online admissions portal. (We thank you for your patience!)
