Academic Resources

If you are having difficulty in classes, UCLA offers a wide array of services designed to help you improve your studying habits and meet the challenges presented by specific classes.

Covel Tutorials

Covel Tutorials is staffed by carefully selected and trained peer tutors, offers registered UCLA students free individual and small-group tutoring aimed at developing academic skills and critical thinking. Composition Tutorials offers UCLA students individual assistance with writing tasks at any stage of the writing process, ESL Tutorials assists non-native speakers of English with English grammar, idioms, pronunciation, listening comprehension, and composition and the Math/Science Tutorials offers tutoring for selected introductory math/science courses. All programs are located in Covel Commons in Sunset Village.

UCLA Student Retention Center

The Student Retention Center is a multicultural and ethnically diverse environment that empowers students with the tools and strategies necessary to academically achieve their goals. The SRC prides itself in ensuring that students maximize the resources available at UCLA to create a positive academic environment. The SRC support programs include: peer counseling, study hall, study groups, mentorship, workshops. In addition to these resources, the Student Retention Center offers class/professors evaluations, an exam file of previous and present courses, internship opportunities and academic outreach and recruitment. While the SRC can provide unlimited student support, it is initially the responsibility of the student to make the first step in making a decision that will lead to his/her graduation.

All UCLA students pay for these programs, and thus all students can refer to them for assistance - regardless of your background or ethnic affiliation. These programs were established to target specific racial/ethnic groups on campus for higher retention rates, but the skills that their peer counselors have learned in doing this work can help all students who are experiencing academic difficulties.

Academic Advancement Program (AAP) Tutorial Center

The Academic Advancement Program (AAP) Tutorial Center provides free tutoring to students participating in the AAP program through its Humanities, Physical/Life Sciences, and Social Sciences Labs. AAP is located at 1209 Campbell Hall.

Dashew International Center

The Dashew International Center offers one-on-one writing tutorials for international students as well as an English Conversation Program (ECP) for international students, their spouses, family, friends and others.
