The Nazarian Center for Israel Studies is pleased to name Lisa Weisshar winner of the first UCLA Undergraduate Israel essay competition.
A third year Political Science major and Hebrew and Jewish studies minor, Lisa first traveled to Israel as a participant on the March of the Living in 2008. She recently participated in the University of California Education Abroad Program at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
According to Lisa, “Living and studying side by side with Israelis and Arabs in East Jerusalem this past year provided me with a unique understanding of the Arab-Israeli conflict. In addition, while I was in Israel, I was lucky to travel throughout the beautiful country and meet truly remarkable individuals. While at Hebrew University, I took a Foreign Policy of Israel class taught by Dr. Meron Medzini, whose personal anecdotes from years of working with the Government of Israel made the course material come alive like never before. I look forward to returning to Israel to continue my studies and visit with good friends.”
We invite you to read Lisa Weisshar’s prize-winning essay German Reparations to Israel.

The competition, expected to continue next academic year, is open to any UCLA undergraduate enrolled and in good standing. Students are invited to submit academic essays of a variety of kinds—review essays, research papers, textual studies—with a focus on Israeli politics, society, or culture.
