The rise of Indigenous political power in Bolivia came accompanied by a greater presence of Indigenous Andean cultural practices in the public sphere. What has this meant for Indigenous languages in Bolivian public life? Focusing on the Aymara language in highland western Bolivia, this talk draws from Swinehart’s 2024 Voice and Nation in Plurinational Bolivia: Aymara Radio and Song in an Age of Pachakuti to show how diverse actors place Aymara language media at the center of their engagements with Bolivian publics.
