Amazonian El Niño Apocalypse

With the coming El Niño, California faces the deluge, while Amazonia and Northern Brazil stand to face crushing drought. Past El Niños have had severe effects on Brazil, drying out some of the largest tributaries of the Amazon and throwing the country’s arid Northeast into penury and dispossession. River transport – Amazonia’s life blood - literally evaporated, and the heated landscapes burst into flame. Join us to hear from José Marengo, one of the most renowned modelers of El Niño’s effects, and Ane Auxiliadora Alencar, who has been analyzing the impacts of Amazonian transformations for decades. They will discuss the dimensions of this looming catastrophe, what it means for Brazilian society, and the larger questions of landscape and climate change.
