Please join us for a small reception with Pascal Khoo Thwe, who will talk about his memoir, "From the Land of the Green Ghosts: A Burmese Odyssey." The evening will be co-hosted by Global Health Access Program (GHAP) and the Foundation for the People of Burma (FPB). Hal Nathan and Heather Graham from FPB and GHAP will be on hand to speak about their humanitarian work in Thailand and Burma.

In 2002, Burmese author Pascal Khoo Thwe was awarded the Kiriyama Prize in nonfiction for his autobiography From the Land of Green Ghosts. This poetic memoir describes a young man's upbringing in a remote village in southeast Burma and his subsequent journey from his strife-torn country through Thailand to Europe. Thwe, the first member of his community ever to study English at Mandalay University in Burma, became a student rebel and participated in the insurrection of 1988 after successive economic crises forced him to give up his studies. He then became a guerrilla fighter in a life-or-death struggle against the government and eventually escaped to the West. Written in exile, this memorable book recounts Thwe's journey to freedom despite almost unimaginable odds.

"Probably the best memoir you will read this year." - San Francisco Chronicle

"A gripping adventure... a Burmese writer of uncommon elegance and sensitivity." - NY Times
