Ong Keng Sen's interpretation of Shakespeare's King Lear brings artists from Japan, Thailand, China and Indonesia to work together on this intercultural and collaborative piece that toured Asia & Europe.

Bringing cultures, ideas and genres together, director Ong Keng Sen is one of the world's most provocative contemprorary voices in theater. His productions and initiatives have made theater a transcultural, transdisciplinary collaborative art. Keng Sen is known for his rejection of authenticity and his embracing of multiple realities and hybridity within Asia. His work is characterized by bold reinvention of classical methods and interweaving of theatrical traditions.

In 1994, Keng Sen initiated The Flying Circus Project, a creative strategy laboratory which is a robust encounter between contemporary arts and traditional performance. Believing that it is important to represent on stage an Asia of today, Keng Sen directed Lear which premiered in Tokyo. To date, this production has toured nine cities in Asia, Europe and Australia including the Festival of Perth. His rich body of international work ranges from the large scale critically acclaimed productions of LEAR and GEISHA to more intimate and personal stories based on the Milosevic trials and mass killings in Cambodia.

Ong Keng Sen is UC Regents' Lecturer 2007.
