UCLA’s Cotsen Institute of Archaeology opens its doors for the 13th annual Open House. Enjoy lectures by faculty, view short films of archaeological sites, visit the children’s activity corner, and explore laboratories and archives.  Fowler Museum educators will also lead tours of Intersections: World Arts, Local Lives.  The Institute and its archaeology labs are housed in the A-level of the Fowler Museum building.  For information, call 310/206-8934 or visit online.

Kids in the Courtyard: Moving Pictures, Watch and Whirl
Sunday, May 17 from 1–4 pm
How do artists bring still images to life? In this workshop, you'll experiment with persistence of vision by making a phenakistoscope—a spinning disk with illustrations and openings around the edges. As the phenakistoscope starts whirling, your eyes hold the image seen through a opening long enough for one image to merge into the next one, making moving pictures like the vidoes and films in Continental Rifts: Contemporary Time-Based Works of Africa.

Conspicuous Consumption: Cloth and Liquor in the Art of El Anatsui
Doran H. Ross, senior research scholar at the Fowler Museum, addresses the recent work of the Ghanaian/Nigerian artist El Anatsui and its roots in Asante and Ewe kente cloth, and in the Asante adinkra tradition.  The transformation of handwoven textile compositions into a series of sumptuous wall hangings composed of re-purposed neck rings and caps from liquor bottles has vaulted El Anatsui into the upper echelon of the world’s most sought after artists.  The lecture highlights two new acquisitions by the Fowler Museum now on display in Tranformations.

Fowler Out Loud: Samba de Raiz, A "Roots" Samba Experience
Thursday, May 28 at 6 pm
Beto Gonzalez and friends present a repertoire of classic Afro-Brazilian musical styles that have been instrumental in the development of urban samba: samba de roda, ijexa, batuque, samba de terreiro,and partido alto.  This intimate performance features some very special guests and plenty of dancing and singing with the audience.

KidsMuse: The Fowler's Creative Summer Camp
Monday-Friday, July 20–24, 9am–12 pm
Session I for Ages 6–8
Monday-Friday, July 27–31, 9am–12pmSession II for Ages 9–12
KidsMuse goes “Down Under” with activities inspired by our two exhibitions of Aboriginal paintings. Explore art and culture from Australia’s Western Desert and learn about the unique animals of the continent. Create paintings using handmade brushes, learn about abstract design and symmetry through face painting and sand art, make boomerangs and clapsticks, take a walkabout on the UCLA campus, build a solar oven to melt some “s’mores on the barbi,” and more!
