2027 Transatlantic Policy Symposium (TAPS) CALL FOR PAPERS
Indispensable Allies, Parallel Crises: A New Transatlantic
Friday, 19th February 2027
For nearly eighty years, the transatlantic relationship has rested on a bargain: the United States provided security for Europe and backed the rules-based order, and Europe, in turn, became a stable, prosperous partner within it. Today, that bargain is being pulled apart by “America First” unilateralism on one side and aspiration for European strategic autonomy on the other. Yet the United States and Europe remain bound by common struggles, from Russian revanchism and Chinese economic coercion to disruptive technologies and the rise of challengers beyond the political center. They remain indispensable to one another, but their partnership can no longer rest on assumptions built for a different era.
What should a new transatlantic bargain look like? Can the United States and Europe turn their interdependence into collective strength against Russia and China, while ensuring that technology and trade policy promote economic security and general welfare for both sides of the Atlantic? Can the United States and Europe forge a cohesive response to the challenges of today?
The 2027 Transatlantic Policy Symposium invites you to engage with these questions. You may consider what are the biggest economic, security, political, social, or other challenges facing Europe and the transatlantic relationship and how this can be strengthened to face them. We welcome contributions from all disciplines, including Political Science, International Relations, Economics, Law, History, and related fields, that offer answers to these questions.
