Summer Fieldwork Fellowships to Learn How to Effectively Implement Programs to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and Eradicate Poverty

The Hilton Global Summer Scholars will undertake a training fellowship on initiatives focused on reducing poverty and achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For the summer of 2017, scholars will be placed with civil society and/or think tank partners around the world to conduct intensive fieldwork projects. Before, during, and after these summer experiences, scholars will contribute to building the evidence base on what works to improve the lives of the poor and most marginalized communities, while gaining valuable international experience and gaining the opportunity to share findings with a range of stakeholders.

ELEMENTS OF THE FELLOWSHIP

• Scholars will spend up to 12 weeks in summer 2017 working internationally on initiatives focused on reducing poverty and achieving the SDGs.
• Before, during, and after the fieldwork, scholars will gain an understanding of how to use evidence to achieve sustainable development through the following activities:
• During the spring, scholars will secure a summer placement, attend an interdisciplinary seminar series featuring faculty from across the campus, and work with mentors to prepare for the fieldwork.
• During the summer, scholars will work closely with a local organization to help them gather the evidence that is most useful to the local organization to make progress on the SDGs.
• Following the summer fieldwork, scholars will receive training from dissemination mentors on how to create materials that make their findings accessible to policymakers and civil society, and will have the opportunity to present and receive feedback on findings from researchers, fellow scholars, and faculty from across the UCLA campus.
• Scholars will acquire valuable hands-on training to prepare for careers with civil society organizations, global intergovernmental organizations, governments, private sector initiatives, think tanks, and others.
• Scholars will receive $5,000 to fund their summer fieldwork. Where applicable, scholars may apply to receive academic credit for their global experience, in accordance with the policies of their school.

INTERNATIONAL PLACEMENTS FOR SUMMER FIELDWORK

For the summer fieldwork placements, scholars will be matched with a partner organization based upon the organization’s needs and the skills, experience, and program of study of each scholar. Whenever possible, scholars will be partnered with students from the regional sites. Placements will be in one of the following regions:
• Latin America
• Sub-Saharan Africa
• Asia

Upon returning from the summer fieldwork, scholars will submit a written report, deliver a presentation on their experience, and receive guidance on making findings widely accessible.

Scholars may propose a placement with an organization outside of the approved partner list, but all alternative placements are subject to approval.
