The Indonesian Studies Small Grants are available to UCLA graduate and undergraduate students for research on Indonesia conducted during Summer 2021.
Through a generous gift from Julia Gouw, the UCLA Center for
Southeast Asian Studies is pleased to announce the availability of small grants to support projects focused on Indonesia during Summer 2021.
The funding is available to UCLA undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduates are especially encouraged to apply.
Grants range from $500 to $1500 for returning applicants and up to $2000 for new applicants. Funding will be disbursed as spring or summer 2021 financial aid through UCLA Financial Aid Office or UCLA Graduate Division. Grant
recipients will be required to write a 1-page report
of their activities and provide the main deliverable (dissertation chapter draft, video link, presentation, portfolio, event flyer, etc.) related to the proposed project.
Examples of projects and activities that can be funded:
- Reimbursement for conference registration fees and expenses in 2021
- Reimbursement of fees for internship or other professionalization programs related to Indonesian Studies
- Reimbursement of purchases of software, technology and educational materials for research
- Remote Indonesian language study program
- Online course, academic program, workshop or summer institute in Indonesian Studies
- Translation of documents and resources related to Indonesian Studies
- Archival research on Indonesia at/through UCLA
- Dissertation writing
- Fieldwork in Indonesia (if you are currently in the country)
- For organizing a virtual event, performance, exhibit or film screening
- For the development of videos, podcasts, music, booklets, websites or artwork
- For the creation of curriculum, survey data, or community resources to be shared
- Combination of these activities and/or other projects
Interested students should submit:
- a 1-2 page proposal that explains the research activity as it relates to Indonesian Studies along with a project timeline
- a CV or resume
- an unofficial transcript
- an itemized budget or expenses sheet
- receipts for previous payments and purchases of research materials and services and/or invoices for fees for participating in events and programs
- one letter of recommendation from an academic advisor/faculty mentor
