Out of Sight, At Sea: Migrant Labor and the Hidden Worlds of Global Seafood
*Hybrid Event*

This lecture by Beatrice Zani (French National Centre for Scientific Research) draws upon more than four years of multi-sited ethnographic research in Taiwan, Indonesia, and Singapore and explores the lives of Southeast Asian migrant fishers employed aboard distant-water fishing vessels. Combining participant observation with more than 140 interviews with migrant workers, vessel owners, labor brokers, port authorities, NGOs, and trade unionists, Zani examines how labor takes shape across constantly shifting maritime environments in which legal authority and accountability are fragmented.

Territorial Discontent: CHamorus, Filipinos, and the Making of the United States Empire in Guåhan [Book Talk]

This one-hundred-year history of the island of Guåhan, also known as Guam, charts how Indigenous CHamorus and Filipino migrants navigated and negotiated the expansion of US imperialism and militarism in the Pacific. Kristin Oberiano's book unravels this entangled history and exposes the limitations of liberalism in anticolonial resistance.
