David S. Powers is Professor of Islamic law and history at Cornell University.  His most recent book is Law, Society and Culture in the Maghrib, 1300-1500.  His Studies in Qur'an and Hadith: The Formation of the Islamic Law of Inheritance has recently been translated into Bahasa Indonesian as Peralihin Kekayaan dan Politik Kekayaan: Kritik Historis Hukum Waris.  He is also the editor of the journal Islamic Law and Society.
