In 2020, the world watched horrified as unprecedented wildfires wreaked havoc from the Amazon in the north to the Pantanal in the south. This tragedy owes much to the policies of Jair Bolsonaro, who has undermined decades’ worth of environmental protection measures. Raoni Rajão, coordinator of the Laboratory for the Study of Environmental Services Management at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, will discuss this crisis in the context of the upcoming UN Glasgow Climate Change Conference.
.
Professor Rajão has served as a climate negotiator for Brazil and is one of the foremost modelers and evaluators of deforestation processes, policy, and impacts of supply chains. As an analyst in science and technology studies, he has also explored the deeper framings of both science and policy in Amazônia. An activist-scholar, he has spoken widely in Europe, the U.S., and Brazil.
Moderated by Susanna Hecht, Director of Center for Brazilian Studies.
