Since taking office in 2018, Brazil’s far-right president Jair Bolsonaro has launched an unrelenting war on cultural production, rooted in his belief that artists and their progressive politics undermine “traditional” values.  The federal Ministry of Culture was abolished. State support for the arts was drastically cut. And artists who run afoul of Bolsonaro are subjected to public attacks by the president and his online army of supporters. Join the Center for Brazilian Studies and two renowned documentary filmmakers for a discussion of art under assault and art as resistance.
