Two new faculty members join the Institute's academic programs this fall, following three who began teaching for the Institute in 2015.
UCLA International Institute, September 28, 2016 — The UCLA International Institute starts fall quarter with a strong lineup of interdisciplinary undergraduate degree programs in global and area studies, including many new faculty members.
Not only does the Institute offer one of the few undergraduate degrees in international development studies in the United States (a highly competitive program), it recently launched an enormously popular global health minor. Its rigorous programs in global and area studies continue to attract top UCLA undergraduates, with master’s degrees offered in African, East Asian and Latin American Studies.

Over the past several years, the Institute has worked to strengthen and consolidate its Academic Programs and teaching faculty. Many professors who teach in Institute programs have been hired with joint appointments to the Institute and a disciplinary department such as political science, sociology, anthropology, or a department within one of UCLA's professional schools. To showcase the many faculty who teach the core required courses in our academic programs, as well as those who have long taught for our programs, the Institute recently created a teaching faculty webpage. There you will find pictures, links to professors’ websites, and articles and profiles.
Please join us in welcoming our newest faculty members, who joined UCLA this fall: Assistant Professor of Political Science Maggie Peters (http: //www.polisci.ucla.edu/content/margaret-peters), who will teach in the Global Studies Program; and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry Dr. Ippolytos Kalofonos (http: //hssm.semel.ucla.edu/people/ippolytos-kalofonos-md-phd-mph), who will teach in the Global Health Program. (Keep an eye out for profiles of these two scholars over the next two months.)
Peters and Kalofonos join a cohort of recent hires who began teaching at the Institute in the 2015–16 academic year: Hannah Appel, assistant professor of anthropology (Global Studies); Kevan Harris, assistant professor of sociology (International Development Studies) and Laurie Hart, professor of anthropology (Global Studies). The Institute is proud to have all of these scholars join the distinguished faculty already teaching in its programs and invites you to explore its new webpage.
