Quanto Vale ou É Por Quilo? (What is it Worth?), a provocative free adaptation of Machado de Assis's short story "Pai Contra Mãe" directed by Sérgio Bianchi, portrays two epochs that are apparently different but that reveal similarities in their perverse socio-economic dynamics shaped by corruption, violence, and enormous social disparities. In the 18th century, slave hunters pursued and sold slaves to plantation owners for one reason: profit. Today, nonprofit organizations—the so-called “the third sector”— exploit the people’s misery, occupying the spaces left by the absence of the state’s social services, but also with the ultimate objective of turning a profit. With a cutting sense of humor and a stellar cast, Quanto Vale ou É Por Quilo? shows how time goes by but nothing changes
