ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

HAROON AZAR, Program Director, Initiative on Security and Religious Freedom

Haroon is a Senior Fellow at the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations and Program Director for the Initiative on Security and Religious Freedom. This Initiative focuses on pioneering multidisciplinary approaches for the most pressing global security challenges while preserving constitutional ideals. Mr. Azar is a recognized national security expert with broad experience working with law enforcement and faith-based communities to further resilience mission areas.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Azar was the Regional Director in Los Angeles for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Mr. Azar’s primary responsibility was strengthening the Department’s relationships with state and local law enforcement, local government officials, faith-based organizations, community groups, academic institutions, and private sector stakeholders. His office partnered with both government and nongovernment entities locally to advance the Department’s risk mitigation mission.

Previously, Mr. Azar worked as Deputy Director for the Middle East, Africa, & South Asia in the Office of International Affairs at DHS Headquarters in Washington DC. His portfolio included providing the Office of the Secretary with policy counsel and management of international affairs related to homeland security. Additionally, Mr. Azar was responsible for negotiating bilateral and multilateral security agreements with international partners focusing on improving immigration policy, visa security, aviation security, border security, supply chain management, and countering violent extremism efforts.

Mr. Azar received a Juris Doctor from the UCLA School of Law where he focused on the intersection of national security and civil rights.

 

RICHARD WALDEN, President and CEO, Operation USA

Richard Walden is president, CEO and founder of Operation USA, also known as Operation California, a Los Angeles-based nongovernmental organization specializing in disaster relief as well as international and domestic health care and economic development projects. Operation USA is privately funded, and has worked in 100 countries since 1979 to provide over $425 million in aid and development assistance; it shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a key member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Mr. Walden has served on the boards of InterAction, a consortium of 175 international nongovernmental organizations which he co-founded in 1984, and of the Institute for International Mediation & Conflict Resolution (IIMCR) in Washington, D.C. Mr. Walden is also an active California-licensed attorney who specializes in international law, civil rights and health care issues and served as Commissioner of the California Health Facilities Commission for the State of California. Prior to that, Mr. Walden was Deputy General Counsel of the New York City Health Services Administration and has been a private consultant on both health care and international development.

 

ANN WANG, CEO & Co-Founder, Enrou

Ms. Wang grew up with a thirst for creative social innovation. Knowing that there had to be a way for people who believed in a better world like herself to make a lasting impact in their daily lives, Ms. Wang combined her passion for social activism and great storytelling with the business skills she learned growing up as the daughter of an entrepreneur to found Enrou. Enrou is a central marketplace for fashionable products that empower developing communities around the world. They use the power of trade to create sustainable change within global communities and to end the cycle of poverty through small-business and community development.

Ms. Wang studied International Development at UCLA and has worked with activism organizations like the UN, Invisible Children and Charity Water. She won the first ever $400K Forbes Pitch Competition and named Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2016. Ms. Wang also serves as the youngest member of the UCLA Alumni Board, and was listed as LA’s top CEOs to watch in 2015.
