African Studies MAThe graduate program in African Studies allows students to engage in interdisciplinary study and intensive research on Africa from a wide range of disciplines, including fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and professional fields.

East Asian Studies MAThe graduate program in East Asian Studies is intended to enable students to develop a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of an individual East Asian culture or to engage in comparative study of two or more East Asian cultures. The program recognizes three areas of specialization: China, Japan, and Korea.

Latin American Studies MAThe graduate program in Latin American Studies at UCLA is among the oldest and most distinguished in the nation, and offers students the unique opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary research and design their own programs by choosing courses from various fields of study that focus on Latin America.

African and Middle Eastern StudiesThe African & Middle Eastern Studies major, part of the International & Area Studies program, is designed for students who want to focus their studies on the culture and society of the following sub-regions: the Middle East, North Africa, the Arab states, or Sub-Saharan Africa.

Asian StudiesThe Asian Studies major, part of the International & Area Studies program, is designed for students who want to focus their studies on the culture and society of the following sub-regions: Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Central Asia.

European StudiesThe European Studies major, part of the International & Area Studies program, is designed for students who want to focus their studies on the culture and society of the following sub-regions: Western Europe/European Union, Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and Mediterranean Europe.


International Development StudiesThe selective International Development Studies major allows students to study, analyze, and critically assess the social, political, and economic forces that, throughout history, have shaped inequality in the modern world. Students engage with debates around the widening patterns of disparities of wealth, power, privilege, and access to social justice that occur in the Global North and Global South.

Latin American StudiesThe Latin American Studies major, part of the International & Area Studies program, is designed for students who want to focus their studies on the culture and society of the following sub-regions: South America, Central America, Southern Cone, Amazonia, or the Caribbean.
