At the signature event of IEW 2018, Marcelo Suárez-Orozco — Wasserman Dean, Graduate School of Education & Information Studies — spoke about a world on the move in which education remains the key to disrupting inequality.
On November 13, 2018, Vice Provost for International Studies and Global Engagement Cindy Fan hosted UCLA faculty, students, staff and donors at the UCLA Global Conversation, a featured event of International Education Week 2018.
The evening reception and talk were held at the UCLA Powell Library Rotunda and East Rotunda, where keynote speaker UCLA GSE&IS Wasserman Dean Marcelo Suárez-Orozco shared his insights on education in a globalized world where major cities on continents worldwide have multinational populations. The program portion of evening was opened by Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh, with Vice Provost Fan then introducing Dean Suárez-Orozco.
Suárez-Orozco’s research focuses on cultural psychology and psychological anthropology, with an emphasis on globalization, education and global migration. His award-winning books have been published by Harvard University Press, Stanford University Press, University of California Press and Cambridge University Press, among others.
His scholarly papers have appeared in such professional journals as Harvard Educational Review, Revue Française de Pédagogie (Paris) and Temas: Cultura, Ideologia y Sociedad (Havana). Dean Orozco regularly contributes to national and international media outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, CNN, NPR and MSNBC.
