Surangel S. Whipps, Jr., who earned an M.B.A. at the UCLA Anderson School of Management in 2012, became president of the Republic of Palau in January 2021.
UCLA International Institute, September 29, 2021 — Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. (UCLA M.B.A. 2012), president of the Republic of Palau, visited UCLA and met with Chancellor Gene Block, Vice Provost for International Studies and Global Engagement Cindy Fan and Anderson School of Management Dean Tony Bernardo and other campus officials on Friday, September 24. Palau is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean comprised of over 300 islands.
At a luncheon meeting, President Whipps caught up on developments at UCLA with his hosts and discussed Palau’s people-centered vision for development, sustainable management of its natural resources and the upcoming 7th Our Ocean Conference. The conference, which will be hosted by Palau in February 2022, will convene global leaders from the private and public sectors to identify solutions to global climate change.
