Anime Voice-Over Workshop for High School Students

High school students of all proficiency levels of Japanese (novice, heritage, advanced) are invited to participate in a workshop that will prepare them for anime voiceover.

Participants will receive 3 days of training for voice-over from the instructor (Professor Asako Hayashi-Takakura) and guest speakers in Japan. Students will present their projects at the end of the workshop, and the winner will receive one complimentary code for the Anime Expo (AX) that will be held in Los Angeles, July 1-4, 2023.

Format: Classes will be held via Zoom.

 

Instructors

  • Asako Hayashi Takakura - Lecturer of Japanese (UCLA) with 20 years experience teaching Japanese with Anime and pop culture.
  • Koji Oikawa - Japanese language educator, working with Japanese language learners all over the world. Selected as one of News Week Japan’s Top 100 Japanese People the World Respects.
  • Yu Okano - Voice Actor Acting in: Adam in The Hollow (Netflix) Henry in The Walking Dead (Hulu/Fox) etc.

 

Curriculum (summer 2023)

Day 1

  • Introduction: Basic practice of pronunciation (30 words and 20 phrases challenge)
  • Characteristics of the Japanese language phonology: mora and intonation
  • Watch anime voiceover videos and learn how to record voices over the video clip

Day 2

  • Recording and listening practice
  • Lecture/training by an anime voice acting specialist
  • Final practice and recording

Day 3

  • Voice-over competition
  • Award Ceremony
