Burkle Center Sponsors Public Course on Key World Issues

Chancellor Carnesale will speak in an innovative spring course on "The United States and the World since September 11," free to the public.

The Ronald W. Burkle Center for International Relations will sponsor an unusual course, Honors Collegium 155. Led by Geoffrey Garrett, Vice Provost of the International Institute and Director of the Ronald W. Burkle Center for International Relations, and Steven Spiegel, Associate Director of the Burkle Center, the course will be based around a series of lectures – free and open to the general public – by distinguished experts from throughout Southern California on the most pressing issues confronting America and the world today.

Students in the course will also work in discussion sections and tutorials to research and write policy papers on topics covered in the course. The following lectures will be held on Wednesdays 12-1.30 pm in Dodd 147 on the UCLA campus:

• April 2: Geoffrey Garrett, "The US and the world – what has changed since 9/11?"
• April 9: UCLA Chancellor Albert Carnesale, "National Security – Evolution or Revolution?"
• April 16: Jerry Green, Director of International Programs and Development, Rand Corporation, "War with Iraq – diversion, necessity, or mistake?"
• April 23: Jack Riley, Director, RAND Public Safety and Justice, "Homeland security – How safe are we?"
• April 30: Steven Spiegel, "The Arab-Israeli Dispute – Have we lost our way?"
• May 7: Steve Lamy, Director of the School of International Relations, USC, "Europe, Russia and the United States – What is the post-cold war relationship?"
• May 14: Susan Shirk, Research Director, Institute on Global Cooperation and Conflict, UC San Diego, "China, Japan and the Korean Peninsula – A region in transition?"
• May 21: Sebastian Edwards, Henry Ford II Professor of International Management, "Latin America – The forgotten crisis?"
  May 28: John Zaller, Professor of Political Science, "American Politics – Will foreign policy dominate in 2004?"
