Program Overview
The M.A. program in African Studies allows students to engage in interdisciplinary study and intensive research on Africa from a wide range of disciplines, including fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and professional fields. A joint degree program with the School of Public Health is available to students interested in pursuing M.A. and M.Ph. degrees concurrently.
The M.A. degree can serve as a stepping stone to a Ph.D. at UCLA or elsewhere, allowing students to build expertise and language capabilities. According to a recent survey, 50% of the program graduates continue studying at the post-graduate level, about 20% are employed in higher education, and a significant percentage work in international or foreign organizations in numerous countries.
