The Phoenix of Gaza is a virtual reality project documenting life in Gaza through 360-degree videos, showcasing its culture, history, and resilience. It aims to capture Gaza outside the realm of death and destruction to show its multiplicity and introduce the multi-dimensional realities there. GazaXR preserves heritage and serves as a documentary of the area, much of which has been destroyed.
The Phoenix of Gaza exhibit will open at UCLA Broad Art Center on the evening of Monday, November 2nd with a poetry reading by Fady Joudah and a lecture by the co-founders of the Phoenix of Gaza, Professors Ahlam Muhtaseb (CSU-SB) and Naim Aburaddi (Villanova). The lecture and reading will be followed by a reception with light refreshments. Doors open at 5 pm; event starts at 5:30 pm.
On November 3rd & 4th, at the EDA space at UCLA’s Broad Art Center, UCLA students, faculty and staff as well as members of the LA public will be able to sign up for 30-minute slots to view videos and images on virtual reality headsets, provided at the exhibit. The Phoenix of GazaXR’s work is supported by the Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab at Princeton University, the x-Real Lab at CSU-San Bernardino, and the Immersive Media Lab at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The project has held over 60 exhibitions with over 10,000 participants at universities, community galleries, and planetariums across the United States.
