Thelma Cabrera is a Maya-Mam social and political activist. She is one of the main leaders of CODECA (Comité de Desarrollo Campesino), an organization dedicated to the defense of the rights of Indigenous peoples in Guatemala, including the right to land property, Indigenous women’s rights, and the labor rights of agricultural seasonal workers. CODECA has also been at the forefront of the struggles for the right to “buen vivir” of the peoples of Guatemala, against the privatization of public services, in defense of the environment and ancestral territories, and for the recognition of ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity by the Guatemalan state. In 2019, Cabrera was appointed by the platform “Movimiento por la Liberación de los Pueblos” as their candidate to run for the Guatemalan presidency.
Neftalí Matías López Miranda is an Indigenous scholar and political consultant, expert on Maya customary law and on contexts of juridical pluralism.
