Hormone Replacement Therapy for Postmenopausal Women in Korea: Excessive concern.. is it justified?

Lecture in Korean

All women go through a period called menopause. Menopause is the time in a woman's life when her period stops. It is a normal part of aging. In addition to this physiological menopause caused by aging, there are also cases where sudden menopause occurs after gynecological surgery or radiation treatment.

Before and during menopause, women experience various changes. Among these, there are short-term vasomotor symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats caused by fluctuation in female hormones and long-term symptoms such as osteoporosis. For some women, these symptoms are mild, and may go away on their own. However, some women need hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to relieve these symptoms.

44% of postmenopausal women in the United States have experienced HRT, while in Korea, the number of postmenopausal women undergoing HRT is very low at 7.8% in 2002 and 6.3% in 2013, and the duration of treatment is less than 1 year in more than 70% of cases. The rate of treatment lasting more than 3 years is only 11.8%. This is thought to be due to excessive concerns about the risks of HRT in Korean society, and we would like to find out whether such concerns are justified
