About the Event
The Dortort Center for Creativity in the Arts at UCLA Hillel is showcasing student art from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, Israel’s oldest academic institution, founded in 1906. The art was selected and sent to UCLA Hillel before the horrific terrorist attacks took place in Israel on October 7th.
NOTE: The program will begin at 8:00 pm with distinguished guests, UCLA Professors Paul Abramson and Tania Abramson who will speak on the subject of "Art and Trauma in Time of War."
About the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design
The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design was founded in 1906 by the Lithuanian Jewish artist Boris Schatz and is the oldest higher education institution in Israel. Every year the academy offers graduate and undergraduate degrees to 2,500 students and is considered Israel's most prestigious art school. The academy's mission is to "educate, inform and nurture the next generation of aspiring artists, designers and architects" by inspiring original thought, furthering tolerance, and promoting freedom of expression and creative liberty that expand cultural horizons as well as impact conventional beliefs. Originally, the Bezalel campus was founded on Mount Scopus, but today the academy has expanded to the Nachlaot neighborhood in the heart of Jerusalem. The new campus was designed through a collaboration between Japanese and Israeli architects and can be seen in the image above.
