Requirements to Declare the Major 

Eligible Students

Freshmen, sophomore and Junior (including newly admitted transfer students)
Seniors (4th years) are not eligible
Good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA cumulative)

Requirements To Declare

  • Complete 6 preparation courses (grades should be posted) with a minimum average UC major GPA of 2.0. Note: INTL DV 1 is not offered every quarter
  • Complete Foreign language: Level 3, equivalent to 3 quarters at UCLA. **
  • Submit Declaration Form no later than Spring of Junior Year-3rd year. (for exceptions, see form instructions below)

Note: Upper division coursework is not required prior to declaring.

* Level 6 (or Spanish 5) of foreign language is required for graduation. Language can be satisfied in various ways See HERE for additional information.

Major Declaration Form

DEADLINE: No later than Spring Quarter of Junior (3rd year)*. You may submit the form at any time (as long as preps are completed) but no later than Friday of Finals Week of Spring Quarter.

*Juniors (3rd years) who can complete all preparatory coursework including foreign language level 3, by the end of summer prior to their senior year, may submit a petition to declare after the deadline. Students must include a Degree Plan on the petition.

NOTIFICATIONS: All students who meet the minimum  eligibility will be declared within three weeks of form submission. Please plan accordingly. Be sure to check your MY.UCLA, inbox and spam folder for a decision. Please refrain from inquiring about your status before the three weeks

DOUBLE MAJORS: If you wish to add IDS as a double major, make sure you meet the criteria and fill out the Declaration Form below. This process only applies to those who are already declared in another major. If you are seeking to double major with a program in a School outside of Letters & Science (e.g. Engineering), consult with the respective School about their policies.

IMPORTANT: Before you submit the form, model your DARS for IDS and check that all preps for IDS are showing up in the correct fields. If they are not, please contact the IDS Advising Office.
