Jamal Abdi became President of NIAC in August 2018 and also serves as the founding Executive Director of NIAC Action, the group’s sister organization. He first joined the National Iranian American Council as Policy Director in November 2009, leading NIAC’s efforts to monitor legislation and policy, and to educate and advocate to the U.S. government on behalf of the Iranian-American community. Jamal previously worked in the U.S. Congress as Policy Advisor on foreign policy, national security and immigration issues. Jamal has written for The New York Times, CNN, and USA Today.
Aslı Bâli is Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law and Faculty Director of the Promise Institute for Human Rights. Bâli’s research focuses on two broad areas: public international law—including human rights law and the law of the international security order—and comparative constitutional law, with a focus on the Middle East. Her article, “Negotiating Non-Proliferation: International Law and Delegation in the Iranian Nuclear Crisis,” appeared in the UCLA Law Review. Her scholarly articles have appeared in the American Journal of International Law Unbound, Cornell International Law Journal, International Journal of Constitutional Law, University of Chicago Law Review, Yale Journal of International Law and Virginia Journal of International Law, among others, and her edited volume Constitution Writing, Religion and Democracy was published by Cambridge University Press in 2017.
Kevan Harris is Assistant Professor of Sociology at UCLA. He teaches courses on international development and the Middle East. He is the author of the book, A Social Revolution: Politics and the Welfare State in Iran (2017).
