UCLA Webinar Series 2022 - Between the Rivers: Water for Development, Peace & Security in the Euphrates-Tigris region
Dr. Arda Bilgen is Teaching Fellow in International Development, University of Warwick - UK, and also an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex. Arda holds a PhD in Development Studies from the University of Bonn. His academic work focus on water politics, hydraulic infrastructure development, and the linkages between conflict, security, and development; namely in the use of hydropower and hydraulic infrastructure as a means of economic modernisation, socio-political change and nation-building in the Global South.
Salman Khairalla is the co-founder and CEO of Humat Dijlah (Tigris River Protectors Association), an international civil society advocacy association. Salman’s work focus on conflicts over water in the Tigris and Euphrates River basin, and active in the steering committee of the ‘Save the Tigris’ campaign, aiming to protect the heritage and water resources of Mesopotamia from the impacts of unsustainable management and climate change. Salman has a Bachelor in Environmental Science from University of Kufa in Najaf, Iraq and since 2006 have been working in the field of environmental and water protection.
Dr. Muna Dajani is currently a Senior Research Associate at the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) and policy analyst of Al-Shabaka – the Palestinian Policy Network.
