UCLA International Institute, December 18, 2015 — A high-level UCLA delegation led by Chancellor Gene Block and Vice Provost for International Studies and Global Engagement Cindy Fan recently conducted three successful UCLA Global Forums in Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai, respectively. The well-received events featured panel discussions with UCLA and local leaders on topics of education, health care, technology, innovation, culture, and the global economy, followed by receptions where UCLA alumni, their families and friends of UCLA networked and heard campus updates from Chancellor Block himself.

In Seoul, Chancellor Block, Vice Provost Fan and celebrated UCLA robotics professor Dennis W. Hong were joined by leading figures in Korean business, education and health care to discuss “The Future of Korea” on Tuesday, December 8. Some 120 alumni, family and friends of UCLA attended the evening. Both the evening event and visits of the UCLA delegation to local institutions received a great deal of media attention, with Chancellor Block interviewed by both Yonhap News and Yonhap News TV.

Two days later, the UCLA Global Forum “The Future of China” was held in Beijing, where local leaders joined UCLA officials to discuss China’s spectacular economic growth and social development since the 1980s, the challenges of its current economic slowdown and its growing global role. Almost 80 alumni, family members and friends of UCLA attended the event, which was covered widely in the local press (see below).

The visit of the UCLA delegation to Asia concluded on December 12 with “Intercultural Innovations,” a UCLA Global Forum in Shanghai that explored how intercultural thinking and activities in Shanghai are sparking new ideas and innovation. Roughly 65 participants came to hear Chancellor Block, Vice Provost Fan, and UCLA Professor of English King-Kok Cheung, together with leaders of local businesses and organizations in Shanghai.
