Berman's Russian language studies at UCLA proved useful many years later...
UCLA International Institute, June 14, 2016 — The UCLA International Institute held its commencement ceremony in Royce Hall on Saturday evening, June 11. Despite cloudy and cool weather that hid Southern California’s sunny norms, students in the Institute’s global studies, international development studies and areas studies programs (including M.A. students) happily celebrated their graduation with family and friends.
Commencement speaker Howard Berman completed both a B.A. in international relations (1962) and a law degree (1965) at UCLA. Yet despite 40 years in state and national politics (including three years as chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee), Berman said it was the first time he had spoken at a commencement. In his warm and friendly address, he related his education at UCLA to his long professional career. (Click below to hear his remarks.)
The Institute was thrilled to have an alumnus speak whose educational and professional interests were so in tune with those of its students. As its newly minted graduates step into their futures, the Institute wishes them much professional and personal success — wherever their lives take them.
