International Education Week offers UCLA students the opportunity to expand their perspectives across borders and disciplines and our faculty to share research on global topics.
UCLA International Institute, November 8, 2021 — International Education Week (IEW), a nationwide initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education, arrives at UCLA the week of November 15–19, 2021. Expect a weeklong series of events, activities, exhibits and performances that will unleash pent-up demand for international educational and cultural exchange on campus and beyond.
This year’s celebration of IEW marks a significant step toward a world in which the global interaction of people, ideas and experience once again approaches the norm at institutions of higher education in the U.S.
Our students, faculty and staff, including international students and visiting scholars, are back on campus. Enthusiasm for the renewal of campus life remains at stratospheric levels as we continue to observe campus Covid-19 protocols that keep everyone safe.
Since early 2020, the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the vital importance of international communication and collaboration. The Departments of State and Education recognized this reality, and the related need to educate global citizens of the future, in a joint statement published last summer: “A Renewed Commitment to International Education.”
The current pandemic is just one example of a global challenge that requires a global solution. Other such challenges faced by the world today include climate change, migration, violence and armed conflict, systemic racism, economic and health inequities and the weakening of democracies worldwide. Devising solutions to the problems of our time requires leaders with the knowledge and cultural sensitivity to work effectively with people from around the world.
International Education Week offers UCLA students the opportunity to expand their perspectives across borders and disciplines, our faculty an occasion to share research on global topics and the general public a chance to discover the many global dimensions of the top public university in the country.
Discover the diverse cultures present at UCLA — literally a microcosm of the world — as well as the vast international research and educational opportunities on campus at International Education Week 2021.
We invite you to visit the IEW website and attend one or both UCLA Global Conversations (with California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Los Angeles Deputy Mayor for International Affairs Nina Hachigian, respectively), watch student performances at Bruins Around the World, compete in International Trivia Night or attend one of many virtual public lectures on contemporary global issues (see complete event listings).
Students in particular can look forward to information sessions on different international studies fellowships available, together with events that explore different international career paths and how best to prepare for them.
Go Bruins! Go Global!
International Education Week is led by the UCLA International Institute and a team of campus units comprised of the Dashew Center for International Scholars and Students, UCLA Residential Life and UCLA Study Abroad/ International Education Office.
