Latin American Studies M.A.

 

Foreign Language Requirement

Students must achieve an advanced level in one language and an intermediate level in another language spoken in Latin America. After completing the program’s language requirement, submit the Division of Graduate Education (DGE) language petition form for each language to the staff academic advisor. Please refer to the DGE website for download instructions and follow the steps provided.

For the Thesis plan, the language requirement must be completed no later than the end of the quarter preceding the expected graduation quarter. The DGE language petition forms must be submitted by Week 2 of the expected graduation quarter, along with an unofficial transcript showing the final course grades.

For the Capstone plan, the language requirement must be completed by the end of the expected graduation quarter. The DGE language petition form must be submitted by Week 2 of the expected graduation quarter, along with an unofficial transcript showing the in-progress course.

 

UCLA offers instruction in the following languages relevant to the Latin American Studies degree: Spanish, Portuguese, and Quechua.  

Students may satisfy the requirement by completing any of the course options below with a grade of B or higher: 

Spanish 25 (Advanced Spanish) and
Portuguese 11A and 11B (or Portuguese 1, 2, 3)

OR:

Spanish 25 (Advanced Spanish) and
Indigenous Languages of the Americas 18A, 18B, 18C (Quechua)

OR:

Portuguese 25 (Advanced Portuguese) and
Spanish 5 (Intermediate Spanish)

OR:

Portuguese 25 (Advanced Portuguese) and
Indigenous Languages of the Americas 18A, 18B,18C (Quechua)


Students who completed language requirement by taking courses outside of UCLA can be exempt from taking additional language courses at UCLA. Please contact the staff academic advisor for more information.
