How to use the text editor, aka the WYSIWYG editor

The What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editor is the formatting tool of the article body that allows you to format your text. Below is an overview of some useful tools:

Paste Plain Text: This function helps you convert the rich text you want to use to plain text (i.e. it strips the formatting). For detailed information, see the related how-to video below.

Insert Image of File: You can use this function to add images or files inline with the text body. For detailed information, see the related how-to page here.

Insert Hyperlink: This button allows you to create a hyperlink inline with text. For detailed information, see the related how-to page here.

Insert Numbering

Insert Bullets

Insert Symbol

Insert Table

Use the New Paragraph button to separate paragraphs in your article. For a simple demo for how it works, see the how-to video below.

The Apply CSS Class button allows you to set a style for certain text. Please contact the IST group for more information about this and other features.

How to copy/paste rich text from an outside source

Please upgrade to a browser that supports HTML5 video or install Flash

To create the body of your article on Webtools, we recommend that you type text directly into the text editor. This will enable a clean start to any formatting applied to your text.

If you want to copy and paste text from an outside source, you should insert the content into the text editor in plain text format. In other words, the original formatting should be removed.

To do this, go to outside text source, copy the text in the outside source by pressing Ctrl + C or right clicking + Copy. Go back to Webtools. Paste the text directly into the text editor by pressing Ctrl + V or right clicking + Paste Plain Text. This will open a pop-up window. Paste the text into that window in the same way, and click the Paste button. Your text will be inserted into the text editor.

Now, as you can see, all formatting is cleared. You can format the text as you wish by using the WYSIWYG toolbar. For our purposes let’s use the Paragraph button to define new paragraphs.

Please note that images should not be copied and pasted into the text editor. If you would like to insert an image or file in the body of an article, please see the related how-to video here.

As you write up the article body, do not forget to Save the article from time to time.
